Techniques & Tackle

Inshore fishing around Sneads Ferry means we'll be using a variety of techniques depending on what's biting and where we find the fish. For King Mackerel, we'll set up a solid trolling spread with live bait and lures, covering water until we locate schools. Spanish Mackerel respond well to both trolling smaller spoons and casting jigs when we find them feeding on the surface. Black Sea Bass fishing means getting down to the bottom structure with jigs and natural baits - these fish love hanging around wrecks and hard bottom areas. When Bluefish are around, they'll hit just about anything, but we'll match the technique to the conditions. The boat's high-end electronics help us mark fish and structure, while the large livewell keeps our bait fresh all day. Our guides will put you on fish and help with technique, but they also know when to step back and let you enjoy the fight.

Species You'll Want to Hook

King Mackerel are the crown jewel of North Carolina inshore fishing, and Sneads Ferry puts you right in their backyard. These fish typically run from 10 to 30 pounds, with some real monsters pushing 40 plus. They're most active during the warmer months from late spring through fall, and they'll give you a fight that'll test your drag system. Kings love structure and temperature breaks, so we'll position ourselves where the cooler inshore water meets the warmer offshore flow. When one hits, you'll know it - they make long, screaming runs that get your heart pumping.

Spanish Mackerel might be smaller than their King cousins, but they make up for it with sheer numbers and pure fun factor. These 2 to 4-pound speedsters are perfect for anglers who want consistent action. They school up heavily in summer and early fall, and when you find them, you can catch them as fast as you can get your line back in the water. They're also some of the best eating fish in these waters, with white, flaky meat that's perfect for the dinner table.

Black Sea Bass are the bottom dwellers that provide steady action when other species are being picky. These chunky fighters typically run 1 to 3 pounds around here, with some larger specimens pushing 5 pounds or more. They're available year-round but really turn on during the cooler months. Sea Bass are structure-oriented, so we'll target wrecks, reefs, and hard bottom areas where they congregate. They're aggressive biters and excellent table fare, making them a favorite among both novice and experienced anglers.

Bluefish are the aggressive opportunists of the inshore world, and when they're around Sneads Ferry, the action can be absolutely electric. These toothy predators range from small "snappers" of a pound or two to hefty "choppers" that can reach 10 pounds or more. They travel in schools and feed aggressively, often pushing baitfish to the surface where seabirds give away their location. Bluefish are available from spring through late fall, and they'll hit lures, live bait, and cut bait with equal enthusiasm.

Scup, also known as porgy, are the underrated fighters that surprise a lot of first-time visitors. These flat, disc-shaped fish might only run 1 to 2 pounds, but they're scrappy little fighters that'll bend your rod over. They're bottom feeders that love structure, and they're often mixed in with the Sea Bass. Scup are excellent eating fish with sweet, white meat, and they're a great species for kids and beginners since they bite readily and fight hard for their size.

Black Sea Bass

Black sea bass are chunky, hard-fighting bottom dwellers that average 2-4 pounds, with some reaching 8+ pounds. These dark, mottled fish love structure - wrecks, rocks, jetties, and drop-offs in 30-120 feet of water. Late spring through summer is prime time when they move inshore to spawn and feed. What guests love about sea bass is their dependable action and excellent eating - firm, white meat that's hard to beat. They're also one of the most cooperative fish we target, making them perfect for beginners and kids. The males turn bright blue during spawn and develop a distinctive hump on their heads. My trick for sea bass: use a two-hook rig with squid or cut bait, and keep it right on bottom. Once you hook up, get them up quick - they'll try to dive back into the rocks and cut you off every time.

Black Sea Bass

Bluefish

Bluefish are aggressive predators that run anywhere from small "snappers" to 20-pound choppers with razor-sharp teeth. These blue-green bruisers love to hunt in packs, attacking baitfish in feeding frenzies that'll churn the water white. We find them from the surf zone out to deeper water, especially around bait schools during summer and fall. What makes blues special is their pure aggression - they'll hit almost anything and fight hard all the way to the boat. The smaller ones make excellent table fare when handled properly, while the bigger fish have stronger flavor. My best tip: always use a wire leader and watch your fingers - these things will bite anything that moves. When you find feeding blues, work fast because the action can be hot and heavy but might not last long. Cut bait, spoons, or plugs all work great.

Bluefish

King Mackerel

King mackerel are the speed demons of our waters, averaging 20-40 pounds with some bruisers hitting 90+. These silver rockets cruise the 40-150 foot range around structure and drop-offs, but we often find the bigger fish pushing deeper offshore. Spring through fall is prime time when water temps hit that sweet 68-84°F range. What makes kings special is their blistering runs - they'll peel line like few fish can. The meat's excellent when handled right, though the bigger ones get stronger flavored. My go-to trick: rig two hooks on wire leader - one through the nose of your live bait, another trailing behind. Kings love to hit the tail end of baits, and that stinger hook saves a lot of missed fish. When trolling, vary your speeds to trigger strikes.

King Mackerel

Scup

Scup, or porgy as many call them, are solid 12-18 inch fish that top out around 4 pounds. These silver-scaled bottom dwellers love hanging around rocks, pilings, and structure in 20-80 feet of water. May through October is when they move inshore, making them perfect targets on our nearshore trips before hitting the Stream. They're scrappy little fighters that pull hard for their size, and what really gets guests excited is how good they eat - firm, sweet meat that's tough to beat. Plus, they make killer live bait for stripers and even white marlin. The trick with scup is keeping your bait right on bottom with just enough weight to hold. Squid, clams, or worms work great. Once you find a school, you can usually fill the cooler pretty quick since they travel in good numbers.

Scup

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are fast, fun fish that typically run 1-2 feet long and weigh 8-11 pounds. These silver speedsters with yellow spots love to school up near the surface around structure, making them perfect targets when we're working our way out to the Stream. Late spring through fall is prime time when they move close to shore. What guests love about Spanish macs is their aggressive strikes and blazing runs - they're some of the fastest fish in the ocean. The meat is fantastic too - mild, flaky, and great for grilling or smoking. The key to Spanish mackerel success is staying mobile. When you see birds working or fish breaking the surface, get there fast but don't run right through the school. Drift to them with small spoons or jigs. Light tackle makes these fish shine, and they'll often hit anything flashy moving at decent speed.
